General Wizards of the Coast News provided by EN World:

The Al-Qadim campaign setting is the mythical Arabia of the D&D; multi-verse. That statement immediately conjures to mind an image that's based upon the tales of the 1,001 Nights, the historical Arabian empires, and, of course, the fantasy movies of Hollywood. The mix varies depending upon whom it is you talk to but it's always the same basic theme: an exotic setting with shifting sand dunes, cool oasis, and glittering seas; handsome rogues, beautiful princesses, evil viziers, and regal caliphs; magic carpets, genie lamps, and dark sorceries. It's a world with ancient ruins to explore and riches to be found. A world with desert sheikhs to out ride, corsair bandits to out sail, and wily merchants to out wit. It's all of those things and much more.

In short, Al-Qadim is about taking the favorite elements of Arabian myth and lore and presenting them the way things might have been.
