There are many things that police officers do that are considered illegal. Naturally, they are not allowed to do the same things regular citizens are forbidden from doing as well, but there are certain things that they do that go beyond that. Police officers sometimes take illegal actions that are connected with their official duties. We call these actions police misconduct.

Many actions fall into this category, some of which include false arrests, falsification of evidence, police perjury, police brutality, witness tampering, unwarranted surveillance, and racial profiling. When the police start to do these things, it is easy to lose our trust in them completely, which happens quite often.

The U.S. has a huge problem with racial profiling, which means that the police officers often presume that someone is doing an illegal activity based on their race. This can lead to tragic events, such as the death of George Floyd on May 25th, 2020.

          Police Misconduct

Police misconduct is fairly common, and it includes many different actions. All crimes that are performed by police officers fall under police misconduct, but it also includes many different ways they can violate the legal rights of ordinary citizens. This often happens during an arrest or investigation. May officers get arrested for engaging in police misconduct, but there are many more of those that do not receive any type of punishment.

Police officers often perform violent crimes, drug crimes, and even sex-related crimes. They often use their authority for personal gain while engaging in illegal activities. Still, even more often, police officers violate the Constitutional rights of citizens. There are many different forms of police misconduct for which police officers get prosecuted. Some of those include physical assault, false arrests, sexual misconduct, theft, fabrication of evidence, and many more.

Sometimes police officers can intentionally show a lack of concern for a person in need of medical assistance, which is also considered misconduct. There are many more examples that happen daily, but one of the biggest ones is racial profiling. Racism is still present all over the world, and people that are not a part of the dominant race often get judged and persecuted for no reason other than the color of their skin.

          The Blue Code Of Silence

An interesting thing about police misconduct is the blue code of silence.

The blue code of silence can also often lead to the obstruction of justice. According to another study from 2019, police misconduct performed by one police officer can often lead to their other colleagues behaving the same way. This can explain how this type of behavior spreads around the police force. If many officers do not get caught while performing acts of misconduct, and sometimes they gain something from it, others will follow. This is why many people want the police to be reformed or even abolished. They often abuse their position to hurt others, sometimes even innocent people.
