Currently, the number of people living in the world is about 7.6 billion. The world’s population has been growing at an increasing rate since 1317 (when the Great Famine ended). The highest world’s population growth rate of over 1.8% annually occurred from 1955 to 1975. The highest growth rate ever experienced was from 1965 to 1970 when it grew by 2.06%. From 2010 to 2015, it reduced to 1.18%, and it is expected to decrease further during the 21st century. The population growth rate varies with each country with some big nations by land size having a smaller percentage share of the global population like in the case of Russia and Canada while others smaller countries like Nigeria ranking among the most populous nations.

The Most Populous Nations in the World

          1) China

China is the most populated country in the world with about 1,392,600,000 people which is 18.2% of the global population. China has been the most populous nation in the world for centuries now. China had a population of over 583 million by 1949 which doubled to 1.2 billion by 2000. The high growth rate forced the Chinese government to introduce the one-child policy in 1979. The one-child policy helped China’s growth rate reduce while creating an imbalance between the older and the young population. The imbalance forced the government to introduce the two-child policy in 2016 which saw the birth rate grow by 7.9%.

          2) India

          3) United States

The United States is the third biggest nation in the world by both land area and population. The country’s population of over 327,374,000 Americans represents 4.29% of the global community. The country’s share of the world’s population has been on a downward trend since 1955 when it was 6.2%. This is attributed to the reduction in population growth rate from 1.58% in 1955 to 0.71% in 2017. The United State’s share of the global population has been reducing even with the increase in the number of immigrants into the country.

          Future World Population Projections

Currently the Chinese have the most significant share of the world’s population followed by the Indians and the Americans, but this is about to change in the next few years since their growth rate has reduced. China’s share has been decreasing in the last few decades while India’s population has been growing. The one-child policy helped China control their population's growth rate, and India is projected to surpass them before 2024. The expected 2030 people estimate shows that India will have a bigger share followed by China and Nigeria will improve in rank from position seven to five.
